Architettura Sonora will present his approach on City Noise Masking and Artificial Soundscape Generation software principles at the forthcoming international conferences around the world:

INTER-NOISE 2010, the 39th International Congress and Exposition on Noise Control Engineering, that will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 13 to16 June, 2010;

37° National Congress of the Italian Association of Acoustics
, that will be held in Siracusa, Italy, from 26 to 28 May 2010;

17th International Congress on Sound and Vibration (ICSV17), that will be held in Cairo, Egypt, from 18 to 22 July 2010.

A.utomatic S.oundscape G.eneration is an audio software able to dynamically and musically inter-react with specific environmental conditions – as crowded habitats, indoor and outdoor, or trafficked areas. In the specific case of an urban application, the A.S.G. software aims at changing the perception of the disturbance of a polluted city-soundscape through the generation of counter-soundscapes musically oriented: designing artificial sound oasis to mitigate and redevelop areas that are strongly congested by city mechanical and media noise.

A Sonic Square for Florence: The AS contribution to a square rediscovery

February 28th, 2010

Saturday, March 13th at the Auditorium “Ente Cassa di Risparmio di Firenze”, a conference will be held to introduce a very fine project: the architectural, visual, acoustic and sonic redevelopment of the square “Piazza della Vittoria” in Florence.
The project is the result of a successful co-operation between the Architecture studio  Poltecnica (in charge for the architectural design), VIE EN.RO.SE engeneering (the acoustic analysis and design) and Architettura Sonora/Applied Acoustics ( in charge for the sound diffusion project and the city noise masking software design): all the partners accepted to join the project in order to create an overall harmonic and integrated planning strategy for the full renovation of the square.

The project is the result of an innovative methodology carried out in data collection and in soundscape analysis, along with the collection of opinions and impressions from ordinary people who daily live the square.
The project shows a solution that could adequately meet the requirements of both the specific, physical and environment needs of the site, combined with the wishes stated by the inhabitants themselves.

Within the conference, Lorenzo Brusci will illustrate the contribution of Architettura Sonora in the redevelopment of the square. He’ll show how A.S. can reinvent and rewrite the experience of the human habitat through a special sound experience design.
Architettura Sonora  plays actually a significant role within the wider re-qualification project. The rebirth of the square go through the application of A.S.’ sound modules and the interactive and automated sound diffusion of original music compositions designed and produced by Lorenzo Brusci and his A.S.’s sound design team (Simone Conforti is the music software designer in charge for the final release of A.S.’ Automated Soundscape Generation system, a software able to produce an interactive ‘noise masking’ effect in an urban context).

The sound modules A.S. will be integrated in the natural and architectural environments, enhancing their relational characters.

At the same time, the site specific multichannel compositions will be based on accurate field recording sessions and historical analysis. The sound module is bound to the specific environmental acoustic characteristics of Piazza della Vittoria itself, therefore it will be changing and adaptive, as changing and adaptive is the habitability of this particular living context.
The sound diffusion system proposed is totally immersive and it’s able to follow the dynamics of the human relationships developing in this architectural context.

Anyone is welcome to take part at the event.

Concept Note:

A special site-specific promenade performance, presented as an installation along with a live performance designed to commemorate and create a cohesive experience invoking the memory of an iconic 20th century artist of our times – Pina Bausch.
The performance is coproduced by Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts an internationally reputed organization working in movement and digital arts as well as education. It is a one of its kind organization in India offering professional training in various aspects of performing arts and is engaged in pioneering research activities in the discipline, along with the premier German cultural organisation – Goethe Institut- Max Mueller Bhavan.
Contemporary dancers, kalaripayattu martial artists from Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts and master percussionists from Kerala will create a unique performance, where both movement and live music complement each other.
Different locations at performance venues and their architectural characteristics will feature as a defining component in placing the physical movement. Spoken words, projected images, interactivity, light and sound will enhance the dramaturgy of the piece along with environmental sound and design which will play an important part in defining the context of the piece.
The first showing would take place in New Delhi at the National School of Drama campus during their International Theatre Festival -Bharat Rang Mahotsav and would also coincide with the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Goethe Institut. Post the performance in New Delhi, the piece will subsequently travel to other metros in India. National Centre for Performing Arts- Mumbai, National Gallery of Modern Art -Bangalore , National Institute of Design – Ahmedabad, Chennai and Kolkata.
The dates for the performance are not fixed as yet though the plan is to tour with it from January 20th to February 4th, 2010.
This performance aims at providing Indian audiences with a platform to experience environmental sound and design along with choreography, installation and video content. The event promises to be a one of its kind showing which will showcase the best in sound technology along with movement art.  Lorenzo Brusci and his Architettura Sonora architectural sound modules will produce habitats of high sound immersiveness and enhance the impact of the performance itself. The sound modules are sponsored by Architettura Sonora, Applied Acoustics, a division of B&C Speakers, the italian company world leader in architectural sound modules design.

Artificial Soundscape Generation. Architettura Sonora researches will improve the state of the art in City Noise Masking methodologies

December 17th, 2009

Architettura Sonora is actively involved in re-designing our common urban environmental sound and acoustic experience.
We will be developing a dynamic environmental interactive sound system - Artificial Soundscape Generation - able to mitigate and rearrange polluted city soundscapes, re-structuring and re-composing its acoustic properties.
Our methodology will be continously mixing a city soundscape with an artificial one: the result is intended to be a music oriented soundscape able to stimulate a new acoustic perception and awareness of the urban space.

This goal is persued with the combination of 2 main features:
AS sound modules and a property interactive software - developed in collaboration with electronic musician Simone Conforti (MART Lab, Firenze).

asg-picture

The software will have the capability to analyze in real time the city soundscape and consequently rearrange the compositional data in order to match experiential and environmental site specific requirements.

The project is aiming to create a full range paradigm to manage the perceptual renewal of public and private spaces.

Since may/june 2010 it will be possible to test and experience our software efficiency and site specific flexibility at the AS’outdoor lab, the New Sonic Garden Lab, Castello del Bisarno, Firenze.

Recent collaborations for Architettura Sonora

The newborn brand “Architettura Sonora / Applied Acoustics” has grown rapidly, as an important player in numerous collaborations and events. In less than a year, A/S has placed their name and their many innovations in some of the world’s most prestigious Architecture.

The recent participation at the SIA GUEST fair in Rimini, Italy allowed A/S to express its potential through collaborations with high profile design offices like Studio 63 and Emanuele Svetti Architetto.

Through the exhibit space of the “Well-come” Lounge Bar, designed by Studio 63, Lorenzo Brusci and the A/S sound design team have recreated four immersive soundscapes, spread by the canopies of four lounge chairs. The technology of “in contact” sound diffusion, otherwise called DML, is invisible to the listener. This allows them to fully benefit from the diffused sound quality, feeling immersed and involved, without being visually impacted. It is the very fabric which creates the sound. The technology provided by A/S is the harbinger of the message inherent in the “Well-come” lounge bar, a real “welcome” in a place of rest, free from encoded patterns.
This work is just one example showing the strong A/S vocation towards customization: strong expressions of our work (sound&soundscape design and hardware design) combined with specific customization in the architectural context.

The Emmanuele Svetti design office has mounted five different environments inspired by the Natural Experience. For each of them, A/S has combined different products and sound design approaches, according to requirements of specific areas.

Lounge area: suspended sound objects; a strong design appeal with formal and functional innovation. The sound is diffused from above, with strong directionality as a result of the mechanical shape of the sonic object, showing a striking tendency to justify the sophisticated electronic lounge music. Perfectly consistent with the surrounding context.

Sonic wall: In the most mysterious area of the exhibit space, the sound comes as a surprise for the visitor. In this case it is propagated directly from the wall by a technique of sound excitement by contact. Surprise and elegance of installation, supported by a soundscape.

Health Resort Area: the A/S earth ware objects, the sophisticated furnishings that they are, also become real actors in the creation of a magic atmosphere proposed by the context. Through the terracotta sphere, the sound fills the space in a discreet, almost hidden way. In other occasions, like in the massage room, the sound is highly directional, like a sound waterfall hitting the user from above. The whole environment reflects a SCI-FI (science fiction) sound design, specifically created as a tribute to this massage room. Very techno-futuristic.

The experience of SIA Guest is the latest step in a path started short time ago but already well established.

SONIC ARCHITECTURE _ Experience sound as a dynamic human habitat

November 8th, 2009

Reflections upon Architettura Sonora’s environmental sound approach.

_Diffusore sonoro di Architettura Sonora vs Diffusore sonoro tradizionale
_Architettura Sonora sonic emitters vs Traditional sonic emitters

Traditional sonic emitters do not allow to diffuse and create a wide environmental sound, they do not act dynamically over the architectural space, they do not excite its internal acoustic properties.
